We began by revising the Past Continuous was were      +              verb-ing We often use it with the Past simple to talk about a longer action interrupted by a shorter action... I was cooking dinner when the phone rang. We then read about a farmer and his sons on p. In this story we saw examples of the Past Perfect When their father had died, the sons looked for the treasure. The Past Perfect is made from had + past participle (3rd part of the verb) We often use it with the Past Simple - the past perfect tells us what happened before the action in the past simple.... My friend rang me at 6.30pm and invited me to dinner, but I had just eaten. We then looked at making sentences to talk about causes and consequences, using the past perfect and the past simple....We used "because" and "so" to connect the ideas I was tired because I had not slept, so I fell asleep in class. I was hungry because I had not eaten breakfast, so I had a big lunch

I had slept badly because my neighbours had had/ were having a party, so I felt terrible. While I was having breakfast, I heard my favourite song on the radio, which made me feel better. We then continued to p.86 and we completed the story there about a motorcycle accident. We then listened to a story about another accident, and tried to remember the details, again using the 3 past tenses....... ACCIDENT (Speed limit – the maximum speed allowed, hail – little pieces of ice falling from

I had never flown before. Compare.... I have never smoked a cigarette. - (present perfect: I have never smoked - never before now) I smoked for the first time when I was 20. I had never smoked before then. (past perfect: I had never smoked - never before a point in the past) We then looked at making sentences to talk about causes and consequences, using the past perfect and the past simple....We used "because" and "so" to connect the ideas I was tired because I had not slept, so I fell asleep in class. My ca

NOTE: THERE IS NO CLASS ON THURSDAY, APRIL 13TH, BECAUSE THE BUILDING IS CLOSED FOR EASTER. APOLOGIES, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE OPEN. THE CLASSES START AGAIN ON THURSDAY APRIL 27TH.  We looked this week at the Past Continuous We form this tense with was were           + verb-ing we use it to describe an activity in progress at a point in the past. We often used the past continuous with the past simple - the past continuous is a long, extended activity, the past simple is a short, interrupting action I was cooking dinner (long, extended activity) when the phone rang (short, interrupting action). Compare When I arrived, they were eating dinner. - the action was in progress when I arrived When I arrived, they ate their dinner - I arrived, and then they started dinner. In the question we have to invert the words like this.... What  were you doing  at 3pm yesterday? For homework we have to complete the exercises on p.74 More practice  here  and here .
