LEVEL 4 GRAMMAR, OCTOBER 26 TH , 2017 We began by revising Countables and Uncountables We focused on few, a few, little, a little I am not popular, I have very few friends. I am not rich, I have very little money. We use “few” and “little” to emphasize a small quantity of things. They both mean “almost nothing”. We use “a few” and “a little” to mean “some”… I don’t have a lot of friends, but I am not lonely; I have a few friends. I am not rich, but I am not poor. I have a little money. We did this exercise for practice. For homework, we had to complete it. http://www.grammarbank.com/a-little-a-few-exercise.html Also for homework, we have to write about what is in our kitchens, using the countable and uncountable expressions Eg. In my kitchen, there is a little milk, very little rice (I have to buy more), a lot of eggs, a few strawberries, a lot of knives and forks but very few spoons (I need more). We revised the use of "a", "an" and "the". I have tree in my garden. Tree is tall and green. I have a tree in my garden. The tree is tall and green. We also looked at writing questions in the present tense. We practiced the questions on p.11. It is important to remember that we use "do" for questions, except for He, She, and It where we have to use "does". Where do you live? Where does she live? With the verb To Be, we do not use "do" or "does" in the questions... He is happy. Is she happy? Are they happy? We also looked at Countable and Uncountable nouns.... we can count countable nouns - 1 pen, 2 pens, 3 pens We cannot count uncountable nouns - we cannot say 1 air, 2 airs, or 1 grass, 2 grasses We cannot make uncountable nouns plural - no "s" for uncountable nouns Countable Uncountable Chair Strawberry Person Cup Tree a/an How many…

We began by looking at the use of articles – “a”, “an” and “the” We use “a” or “an” with singular, countable nouns. I am wearing a shirt. The shirt is blue. The first time we talk about a singular, countable noun, we use “a” or “an” We use “an” before words starting with a vowel an orange an empty bottle I am wearing a shirt. The second time, now that we know which shirt we are talking about, we use “the” The shirt is blue. We do not use a/an with plural nouns Birds can fly. We then looked again the present tense I play She plays I don’t play She doesn’t play Do you play? Does he play? For homework we have to complete the questions on p.11

The pen is black. We often use “a” with “there is…” We use “the” with names of rivers – The Shannon, The Volga, The Nile More info here. Exercises here . We began by looking at the difference between Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives A Noun is a thing, person or place - table, brother, music, city, apple, cow A Verb is an action word, something you do - go, eat, sit, work, cook, climb, feel An Adjective is a word that describes a noun - happy, green, sad, tall, fantastic We then quickly looked at the verb To Be The important thing is that with questions in the verb To Be, we must change the order of the words I am happy Am I happy? He is happy. Is he happy? We are happy. Are we happy? We then learned some verbs connected to different jobs... A policeman catches/arrests criminals and solves crimes A waiter serves customers A doctor treats patients A nurse gives injections It is important to remember that we need to use the third person "s" when talking about one person. We also looked at the third person. The third person of the verb is He, She or It, and we need an "s" at the end of the verb
