We continued with verb patterns. We spent some time looking at some verbs that can be followed by both -ing and to: Start, Begin, Continue, Intend are all verbs that can be followed by -ing or – to do with no change in meaning. It started to rain. It started raining.  Some verbs can also be followed by -ing or -to do, but the meaning changes….. Stop I stopped smoking because I wanted to improve my health. “smoking” tells you what I stopped. I was working hard but I got thirsty. I stopped to drink some water. “to drink” tells you why I stopped. There is a fuller list of verb patterns here…. https://www.ssag.sk/studovna/files/VERB-PATTERNS---tables.pdf We then looked at verbs that are followed by a preposition, on p.71 and 72 Insist on doing Talk about doing Congratulate on/for doing Succeed in Approve of Decide against Look forward to Apologise for All followed by verb+ing More practice here.   https

We began by revising “yet” and “already”. Have you done it yet? (“yet” in questions) I haven’t done it yet. (“yet” in negatives) I have already done it. (“already” in positive statements) We then went on to verb patterns. I want (to go/go/going) to the cinema. Here we have to choose “I want to go..” as want always takes “to + infinitive” Other verbs like this I hope to go I plan to go Verb patterns are the way we use each verb when it is followed by another verb. Some verbs are followed by “to + infinitive” Some are followed by “verb+ing”: I saw him going to the shop. Some are “verb + sb + to do” – I want him to help me. Some are “verb + sb + do” – She let me use her phone. For homework we had to do the exercises on p. 70 – no.56.1

We concentrated on the Present Perfect in this class. First we revised the Present perfect to talk about experience: Frank has lived an interesting life. He has been married 5 times. He has acted in a Hollywood movie. The important thing here is what he has done, not when. When we add more information, we use the Past Simple. Frank has acted in a Hollywood movie. This happened in 1992. The movie was called Monster!. We practiced in groups.... Have you ever been married? Yes, I have. When were you married? I was married in 1997. Have you ever been to France? Yes, I have. When did you go to France? I went there in 2001. We then looked at "yet" and "already". We also use the Present Perfect with them. We use "already" with a positive statement. I don't need to do my homework, I have already done it.  We use "yet" with negatives and questions... Have you finished yet? I haven't had dinner yet.

We revised the first two conditionals First conditional: If I go to the party, I will call you. A possible situation in the future. Second conditional: If I had more money, I would buy a new car. Imaginary situation in the present or future. We also mentioned that in the second conditional, we can use "was" or "were". If I were you, I would go to the doctor. If I was you, I would go to the doctor. We continued with the Present Perfect. We used it with ever and never.  Have you ever lived in a foreign country? I have never ridden a bike.  To make it, we need  have/has + past participle. We use the Present Perfect to talk about what has happened, without mentioning when.  The past participle is the third part of the verb, Go - went - gone do - did - done
