LEVEL 5 GRAMMAR, JANAUARY 30TH, 2018


We continued with verb patterns. We spent some time looking at some verbs that can be followed by both -ing and to:
Start, Begin, Continue, Intend are all verbs that can be followed by -ing or – to do with no change in meaning.

It started to rain.
It started raining. 

Some verbs can also be followed by -ing or -to do, but the meaning changes…..

Stop

I stopped smoking because I wanted to improve my health.
“smoking” tells you what I stopped.

I was working hard but I got thirsty. I stopped to drink some water.
“to drink” tells you why I stopped.

We then looked at verbs that are followed by a preposition, on p.71 and 72

Insist on doing
Talk about doing
Congratulate on/for doing
Succeed in
Approve of

All followed by verb+ing

We began by revising the Past Continuous was were      +              verb-ing We often use it with the Past simple to talk about a longer action interrupted by a shorter action... This week we continued talking about the passive Some examples... I was born in Russia. Spanish is spoken in Latin America. The Euro is used in many countries in Europe. America was discovered by Columbus. Cricket is played in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Farmers grow 10,000 tonnes of potatoes every year. Subject    verb           object This is an active sentence When we are interested in "potatoes" and not "farmers", we put "10,000 of potatoes" first in the sentence. We now need to make it passive.... 10,000 tonnes of potatoes are grown every year. To do this, we need .... We continued this week talking about obligation and permission. Obligation have to must be obligatory be compulsory Prohibition must not cannot Not be allowed to No obligation don't have to Permission can can't/cannot be allowed to may we pointed out the difference between Have to and Must Have to: for external rules - "In my job, I have to wear a uniform" Must: for internal obligation - "My shoes are old; I must get some new ones." Though usually they are used in a similar fashion Also: I have to = I must (more or less) But.... "I don't have to" is not the same as "I must not" - I don't have to sleep on the plane, though I can if I want. - I must not take a gun on board the plane.
