LEVEL 5 GRAMMAR, OCTOBER 3RD, 2017

We began by revising the parts of speech: nouns, verbs and adjectives.

We also looked at how words can be nouns and verbs, or nouns and adjectives....

Noun
verb
Adjective
anger

happiness

chair

Room
To anger/ to make angry

To chair a meeting
angry

happy

Roomy

We then went on to look at the third person in the Present Tense
A fireman puts out fires.
A postman delivers letters.
A soldier fights.
A policeman prevents crimes.

We briefly looked at talking about pastimes on p.7 and 8.
Karen swims.
Karen doesn't watch TV.
Does Karen play guitar?

Practice with Questions here.

For homework we had to write about one member of our family using the third person...eg....

My brother lives in Belfast. He works in the university there: he is an administrator. He is married but he doesn't have children. He has two cats. One of his cats likes to escape and tends to disappear for two or three days. The cat always returns, but while it is gone, my brother gets worried and upset. In his free time he enjoys going to good restaurants with his wife, and he also watches rugby: he is a fan of the Ulster rugby team. He also writes stories and novels, though he hasn't published anything yet.

Finally, we went on to discuss the use of "a" and "an". We use these with nouns or adjectives beginning with a vowel, or with a vowel sound.

A banana
An apple
An interesting person.
