We use “a” or “an” the first time we talk about
something
There is a pen on the table.
After that, when we know what pen we are talking
about, we use “the”
There is a
pen on the table. The pen is black.
We often use “a” with “there is…”
We use “the” with names of rivers – The Shannon,
The Volga, The Nile
