We looked again at the Past Perfect

had + past participle (the third part of the verb)

We use it often with the Past simple, to talk about the past in the past

When I arrived, they had drunk all the beer.

,......."they had drunk" happened first, the past perfect always tell us about an earlier action

We also used the past perfect with "never"

We talked about Jack on p. 87

I flew for the first time when I was 61. I had never flown before.

Compare....

I have never smoked a cigarette. - (present perfect: I have never smoked - never before now)

I smoked for the first time when I was 20. I had never smoked before then. (past perfect: I had never smoked - never before a point in the past)

We then looked at making sentences to talk about causes and consequences, using the past perfect and the past simple....We used "because" and "so" to connect the ideas

I was tired because I had not slept, so I fell asleep in class.
My car broke down because I had not taken care of it, so I was late for work.

More practice here.

We then looked at the Past Simple (I worked), the Past Continuous (I was working) and the Past Perfect ( I had worked) together to tell stories.

Practice here and here

.

The Past Simple:  is the main tense for telling stories. It is the most commonly used tense, and can allow us to give a list of actions that happened one after the other...... - I got up, I had my breakfast and I went out.

The Past Continuous: allows us to add more information or action - I got up, and the birds were singing. The sun was shining in the window when I had my breakfast. I went out. My neighbour was washing his car.

The Past Perfect: allows us to refer to a previous period of time in the past - we usually use it with the past simple. - I got up and the birds were singing. I felt good because I had slept well. The sun was shining in my window when I had my breakfast. I had forgotten to buy milk so I just had black coffee. I went out. My neighbour was washing his car because he had just made a long trip to Cork, and the car was dirty.

For homework we had to complete the story on p.86 and then write our own.
