In this class we looked at the Present Perfect Continuous I have been living in Sligo for 4 years. have has               +               been             +            verb-ing We use it to describe an action or a situation that started in the past and continues to the present. We use it with "for" and "since". I have been playing guitar for 20 years. I have been playing guitar since 1997. We practiced asking questions.... How long have you been living in Sligo? How long have you been working? How long have you been playing guitar? How long have you been driving a Citroen? I have been working here for 3 years. For homework we have to make similar sentences about ourselves... I have been living in Sligo for.... I have been running for..... Some more practice exercises here .

We began by revising the Past Continuous was were      +              verb-ing We often use it with the Past simple to talk about a longer action interrupted by a shorter action... I was cooking dinner when the phone rang. We then read about a farmer and his sons on p. In this story we saw examples of the Past Perfect When their father had died, the sons looked for the treasure. The Past Perfect is made from had + past participle (3rd part of the verb) We often use it with the Past Simple - the past perfect tells us what happened before the action in the past simple.... My friend rang me at 6.30pm and invited me to dinner, but I had just eaten. We then looked at making sentences to talk about causes and consequences, using the past perfect and the past simple....We used "because" and "so" to connect the ideas I was tired because I had not slept, so I fell asleep in class. In this class we looked again at the Past Perfect..... had + past participle We often use it with the past simple....                     2.                                      1. - When I got home, the children had gone to bed.  In this example the children had gone to bed before I got home - the Past Perfect (had gone) tells you what happens first, the Past Simple is second We looked at some other sentences and discussed the differences from p.77. A. When I got to the party, they were drinking champagne B. When I got to the party, they had drunk the champagne. In sentence A, there was still champagne left and people were drinking it.
