We revised the Passive voice....

Columbus discovered America in 1492.
America was discovered by Columbus in 1492.
Which sentence is Active, which is Passive?

“America was discovered” is passive… - we need……
           To Be +  past participle (3rd part of verb)

We can use the passive in any tense:

People make BMW cars in Germany.
BMW cars are made in Germany.

I have already cleaned the kitchen.
The kitchen has already been cleaned.

People can pick flowers here.
Flowers can be picked here.

The Wright brothers invented the airplane.
The airplane was invented by the Wright brothers.

Farmers will grow potatoes next year.
Potatoes will be grown next year.

Someone is cleaning the room at this moment.
The room is being cleaned at this moment.

Are these sentences active or passive? – IF they are Active, change them to Passive – and vice versa.

·         The man has just been caught by police. PASSIVE - Police have just caught the man.
·         During the dinner, people ate three chickens and five salmon. ACTIVE - During the dinner, three chickens and five salmon were eaten.
·         Seventeen bottles of wine were drunk at the party. PASSIVE - People drank seventeen bottles of wine at the party.
·         Someone will cook the dinner this evening. ACTIVE - The dinner will be cooked this evening.
·         People say that Picasso was a great painter. ACTIVE -  It is said that Picasso was a great painter.
·         I will wash the car later. ACTIVE - The car will be washed later.
·         I was taught to drive by my father. PASSIVE - My father taught me to drive. 
·         Someone is fixing the TV at the moment. ACTIVE -  The TV is being fixed at the moment.
·         The film is going to be shown at 8pm. PASSIVE -  Someone will show the film at 8pm.
·         The house has been lived in for one hundred years. PASSIVE - Someone has lived in the house for one hundred years.
·         No one has tidied the kitchen for three weeks. ACTIVE - The kitchen has not been tidied for three weeks. 
·         The town was destroyed by the forest fire. PASSIVE - The forest fire destroyed the town.
·         The lawyers are studying the contract. ACTIVE -  The contract is being studied by the lawyers. 
·         Someone will bake a cake for the party. ACTIVE - A cake will be baked for the party. 
·         Someone posted the video on Facebook yesterday.
·         Thousands of tourists visit Galway every year.
·         The fans will celebrate the victory tomorrow.
·         The system has been changed by the government.
·         English is spoken here.
·         100 people attended the play.
·         Someone should clean the streets.

·         The meal is being prepared now by the chef.
