This week we continued talking about the passive Some examples... I was born in Russia. Spanish is spoken in Latin America. The Euro is used in many countries in Europe. Subject    verb           object This is an active sentence When we are interested in "potatoes" and not "farmers", we put "10,000 of potatoes" first in the sentence. We looked again at narrative tenses and specifically at the Past Perfect. We also introduced the Past Perfect Continuous - I had been doing..... The Past Perfect is used to talk about something that happened before another point in the past, and is often used with the Past simple.  I went outside and saw that someone had stolen my bike.  The "had stolen" tells us that it happened before I went outside.  My friend rang and invited me for a drink. I had been studying for hours, so I decided to take a break and join him.  "I had been studying" tells us about an activity that had been happening until a point in the past (my friend ran and invited...).

We began by revising the Past Continuous was were      +              verb-ing We often use it with the Past simple to talk about a longer action interrupted by a shorter action... I was cooking dinner when the phone rang. We then read about a farmer and his sons on p. In this story we saw examples of the Past Perfect When their father had died, the sons looked for the treasure. The Past Perfect is made from had + past participle (3rd part of the verb) We often use it with the Past Simple - the past perfect tells us what happened before the action in the past simple.... My friend rang me at 6.30pm and invited me to dinner, but I had just eaten.
